Sculpture May 20th

Hello!
Today in sculpture we are going to make found object sculptures, or otherwise known as recycled art. Using objects that aren't normally used in sculpture making can be very fun and interesting. I will be bringing in many objects and materials to transform them into whatever you would like. I think this is always an interesting class to have after clay day because clay is one of the original sculpture making while found object art is more contemporary.

Painting May 20th

Today in painting we are going to learn about mural painters! We are going to create our own class mural. Murals can tell stories that can celebrate a joyous occasion or depict something sad. As a class we can make a story together or we can all paint together whatever we would like. I will bring in a few painting examples too! See you soon!

Painting April 29th and May 6th

In painting class on April 29th, we learned about landscape painters. We then went outside and found flowers, sticks, and leaves that we would like to paint.

Lindsey painted her flower and leaf with wings around it.

Eve found two flowers that were white and pink, and painted two paintings displaying them.

In class on May 6th, we learned about expressionism and painting with colors to represent our emotions.

Ori began her painting with an orange flower and a green kangaroo. She said she was feeling happy because she used bright colors. Eventually, she changed her painting to just flowers and created a series.

Lilah finished her painting using blues and oranges.

Ori's series of paintings had many bright colors in it because she said was feeling very happy.

Eve's painting has a sunflower over the ocean. It is also snowing above the ocean. She made a red cloud because she ran out of white paint. She said she was feeling happy.

Sculpture April 29th and May 6th

Hello Everyone! I haven't been able to upload any of our class pictures until now, so here are a few! In class on April 29th, we made an installation. It was Halie's last day too.

We worked on our space to create an underwater theme along with some haunted aspects. Ariel hung fish from the ceiling and drew a fishing scene in between Connor's haunted house and Ori's castle.

Connor worked diligently on his haunted house. The next class, we discussed his inspiration from Ghost Busters.

On May 6th, we made puppets. There were paper bag puppets such as Austin's Batman and Kitty puppet, Emily and Mason's swan and ghost puppet, Connor's haunted paper puppet, and Ori's cat puppet. We learned how to use the hot glue gun, sewing and paper for puppet making.

Hello everyone!

I am very excited for tomorrow's class because we are going to learn about the art movement Expressionism and Abstract Expressionism (my favorite!). We will talk about the different countries it began in and what time period it started. I will show the class examples from artists such as Franz Marc, Jackson Pollock and even Vincent van Gogh. I will provide materials to add different colors, collages, markers, pencils and basically, anything else that could be important to experience creating work abstractly. I think it is just as important for a painter to understand technical concepts as well as painting with emotions. This is the purpose of our class for tomorrow!

Hello everyone! I will be teaching sculpture tomorrow. Tomorrow we are going to work on puppets! We will look at different types of puppets that we can make. This means we will examine fabric, paper, stuffing and possibly learn how to sew. We will talk about what would we like to turn into a puppet (an animal, talking plant or person) and plan out our puppets. It should be interesting to examine what something planned in 2-D form could become in 3-D form. I look forward to see all of you tomorrow!

Hey everyone, today is my last day teach sculpture before Ms. Jessica takes over, so today we're going to do one of my favorite projects!

Installation Day!

An installation is a sculpture that occupies an entire space! It's taking a space and transforming it into something new and creative. We will work on this project collaboratively to create our own unique sculptural installation!

In the past we've transformed our space into a haunted house, an underwater garden filled with octopuses, and a world wide battle between aliens and humans! This day is all about being creative and making whatever you want within the space!

Hello animators!
Today in animation class we are going to take the stories and characters we created last week and begin making our 2D images which we will use for our animation. This means we will draw, color, and cut out our characters and our setting. Remember, to make the charcters move we want to draw the arms and legs separate from the body, then attach them with rotating pins so we can move them for the stop motion film!

Hey everyone! Today in sculpture class, we will be painting and decorating our papier mache masks we made last week. If you brought them home, be sure to bring them to class today! We will learn a little bit about color theory, how to mix and make colors, and we will also talk a little bit about what a mask is and look at examples of masks.

Because today is a painting day, be prepared for a little bit of a colorful mess!

Hello everyone!

Today will be our first animation class of the session! I LOVE animation, and I'm so excited to teach all of you some animation techniques and processes. Animation can be a long process, but it's always fun and always rewarding to watch your creations come to life in a video!

Today in class we are beginning our animation process by talking about story boarding. As a class, we will create a story that we want to animation. Everyone will help create a setting, a plot, and characters for our video, and we will begin designing and drawing our animated characters!

I will also show some examples of animation in class to help inspire the process!

Hey everyone! I'm very excited to start the new session today and meet all the new students! I would like to tell everyone what we are doing today in class:

Papier Mache Day!

Today we will be creating papier mache masks! Papier Mache is a technique that included small strips of paper, water and glue. The water and glue creates a paste that we dip the pieces of paper in and then can sculpt a mask with! After the water and glue drys out, the paper mask stays in the form you arranged it in. Today in class we will sculpt our masks, and next class we will paint them!

What kind of mask do you want to make? It could be an animal, a superhero, a monster, or anything else you want to become!

Sculpture- February 18 and March 4

A few weeks ago in sculpture class we focused on the line in space by making wire sculptures.

First, we sketched out our ideas.

Then, we used our fingers and piers to bend, twist and crumple the wire into shape.

Last Friday we explored making sculpture with the plane. We cut, folded, tied and taped together paper. Some very interesting work was made during this class, and even more interesting things were said.

Today in painting I will be offering some different supplies to make printed painted art, including potatoes and broccoli. I will be encouraging the children to spend time working on one piece and adding details. We will be giving back all the rest of the painting from previous weeks. In addition, I plan to have them finger paint with their own made finger paint shaving cream. .

Hey everyone! Today I will be facilitating both the Sculpture class and Fabric art class while miss Jessica is away.

In Sculpture:

Today we will be creating 3D sculptures using paper only! It's time to challenge our creativity and figure out how you can make a sculpture out of paper! We will think about how we can manipulate paper by folding, cutting, and crumbling it to make it transform from flat to 3D. We will work with different kinds of paper too, such as tissue paper, construction paper, craft paper, and news print. See how each type of paper feels and acts differently and think about how you can use that in your sculpture!

In Fabric Art:

We will be using the energy from the sun to print images onto fabric!! Using a very special type of fabric that is sensitive to the sun, we will go outside and find materials that we'd like to print onto our fabric. If you guys have anything really neat you'd like to print then bring it to class!
While we wait for our fabric prints to finish, we will be making stencils for a future T-shirt design project!

Today in painting class we will be sharing our dried water color paintings from last week and talking about the different effects. We will also discuss shapes in paintings and how to outline things in black, and look at some artwork by Paul Klee. Mood and Feeling". Warm ups revolved around "mood and feeling". Next, play Apple Tree (students grow from a tiny seedling to a strong apple tree following cues of a narrator). We will play with colored scarfs creating "mood". Through music we will create movement to express our feelings. After that, using scene work, we will find ways to outwardly express our internal feeling. Lastly, we will practice the play with all that we've learned. Finally, "Circle Up" and talk about play, mood, and feeling. Also, talk about putting on the play for our family and friends and filming it in the next class.

Hope everyone had a great week. I have lots of fun stuff planned for Creative Movement tomorrow.

We'll start off with the usual yoga pose warm-up and read a book called Hop-Skip-Jump-a-roo Zoo.

Then we'll be exploring the African dance tradition! All the movements in this style of dance are mimed versions of activities we do every day, such as washing clothes or cooking food. We will explore some of the classic steps before inventing some of our own based on the things we like to do every day. We'll also learn about the instruments traditionally used and play the ones we have on hand.

Fabric Art Plans for 2/25/11

Tomorrow for fabric art, we will be making quilts! Some of the ideas we will be considering are the purpose of a quilt, design of a quilt and storytelling through quilts. I am going to bring in an example for all of you to see and experience! Quilting is a great way to express yourself and create something useful. We will begin to work on quilts by making individual small squares of any design we desire! I was thinking four squares would be a good number for us to aim for, but any individual can make as many squares as they would like. When we are finished designing our squares, we will sew them together to form the beginning of our quilt.

Create scenes, as well as do similar or same scenes with character secrets. I will give a secret to the actors before they go into the scene. The secrets will be underlying character "wants, needs, and/or things to accomplish" in the scene that only the character themselves know. After the conflict is acknowledged then actors will try to resolve scenes. Then it's "Circle Up" time and together we will write the play using everything we learned and practice. We will introduce "Mood and Feeling" for next week.

Our ideas for Puppet Making: Sock Puppet, Butterfly & Unicorn. Let's see what happens.

Mason- "Emily, what are you making?"
Emily- "I have no idea, I'm just making a Whatever Puppet."
Emily continued working on her Whatever Puppet until the end of class. When she was done it was covered with bright colors and lots of fabric paint. She loved it.

Frankie- "I can't pull this apart"
Jessica- "How big do you need it?"
Frankie- "Just big enough to stuff in here."
Jessica- "Do you want me to cut it?"
Frankie- "Yeah, now it fits"
Frankie worked on her sock puppet, eventually adding details like wings and turning it into a butterfly.

Mason- "Hey, look at my triangle."
Mason's triangle became a detail on his puppet made using a brown paper bag, markers and fabric paint.
Hope- "Mason, tell me about what you are making."
Mason- "I don't know, I'm just making---it's cool stuff. It has cool stuff on it."

I'm really excited to work on developing the story for our play tomorrow!

Vocal/Body Warm Ups: A few simple games and songs to get us moving and talking.

Conflict and Resolution: To introduce the ideas of conflict and resolution, I'll present a scenario that poses a conflict which we'll have to reach a resolution for together.

The Royal Smile: We will invent a reason why the King and Queen of Gainesville are feeling sad, then take turns acting as the king, the queen, and the court jester who tries to cheer them up, trading roles each time the jester succeeds.

The Play: Picking up where we left off last week, we'll continue working with scenes for our play in character. We'll define a three-act play, talk about plot, and create a plot for the class play.

I want to remind everyone that if you choose to stay for the whole class, it's best if you participate - then everyone can be involved in the learning process. Thanks! See you in the morning.

Today in sculpture, we'll be bending, cutting, and drawing with wire! We will start off with an exercise called Drawing in Space to get us familiar with the idea of using wire to create 3D forms. This will involve everyone getting a pencil and paper and drawing something with a continuous, unbroken line. After we've drawn our lines, we'll imagine creating that line with a piece of wire. We will discover the bending qualities of wire as well as learn how to quickly transforming something from 2D to 3D.

We will introduce "Set and Blocking" and do warm ups. We will Explore "The Space" creating different imaginary sets and blocking. We will play the "What Are You Doing?" game (each person comes up with a different activity then the first). Then we will play "What's This?" (take an object and create something new out of it.) Then, we will practice entrances and exits using imaginary and real props on an imaginary and real set. Circle up time, we will reflect on blocking and set, entrances and exits, and what that means for the class play. Introduce the words conflict and resolution for next week. See you there!

Vocal/Body Warm Ups: A few simple games and songs to get us moving and talking.

Mirror: In pairs, we will take turns being actors and mirrors. One person will make faces, move their bodies, and talk to their partner, while the other person acts as a mirror and mimics everything their partner is doing.

On Stage: On our magic stage, everyone will have a chance to mime an emotion for their classmates to guess. Then we'll move to conversations with partners on stage and talk about lines.

The Play: Now that we've come up with the characters and some possible settings for our play, we'll recall them and try out some scenes on stage. We'll work on developing our characters.

After our warm-up tomorrow, we'll be dancing with a Latin flair! There are a number of simple, fun dance steps to learn in the realm of Latin dance, which we'll try out together to the particular rhythms matched with the different dances:

-Rumba

We'll make a game of listening to songs in these different rhythms and figuring out what dance fits best. We'll end our class with the Macarena.

Hey everyone! Last week's sculpture class we created sculpture using recyced paper pulp called "Papier Mache".
This week, we are going to embelish, or decorate, our creations!
Provided will be different materials to work with, such as paint, paper, glue, beads, sea shells, fabric, and much more! This is the second step in our exploration of transformating our materials.

We opened this week's sculpture class by introducing ourselves and telling the class what our favorite thing to make is. Some of the favorites included cats, owls, walrus, ballerinas, and fire trucks. Then we showed the class the days material.

We will introduce "Character and Scene". Secondly, we will start off with some body and voice warm ups. I will encourage students to lead the warm ups and prepare something for the next week. We will do some bonding exercises and name games. Next, we will create a character through movement by moving in the "space" to music. Characters will interact with each other in new environments, thus creating small scenes. Then, we will create characters on stage and have another person create an opposite character to interact with one another. Again creating scenes. Then, "Circle Up" time and we will reflect on character and scene and talk about creating a play with "Character and Scene". I will pitch "Set and Blocking" and let everyone know they are welcome to bring in a non-violent object to be part of our set.

This Tuesday in painting class, we will look at some art by Van Gogh and talk about his syles of painting. We will try to paint with a tiny brush or q-tip to mimic his small and short strokes to make a painting. Time permitting, I plan to also play various types of music and talk about mood and painting; how our work it affected by our moods. We will paint to it and see how different types of music stimulate our moods and expression of art.

Step 1: Tie a loop of yarn onto your finger.

Step 2: Loop the yarn over your finger

Step 3: Loop it one more time.

Step 4: Throw the middle yarn over the end of your finger.

Repeat step 4 & 5 until your knitting is the length you want it.

Has everyone thought about their characters this week? Last time, after exploring characters and costumes, we ended with everyone naming what characters they would like to be in our emerging class play. Tomorrow, we'll be learning about sets and blocking. Here's a peek at what I've got planned:

Vocal/Body Warm Ups: A few simple games and songs to get us moving and talking.

Apple Tree: Through this story of a tiny seed growing into a big apple tree, we'll explore how our bodies can move in certain ways to tell the story, or to set the scene.

On Set: We'll discuss what a set is and what objects (props) we might find in ones we imagine, then we'll play an imaginative game to cement our understanding.

Back on Stage: Bringing back the concept of the stage, we'll devise a few scenes for characters to interact in.

Set the Scene: Finally, we'll settle on a setting for the class play.

First Fabric Art Session!

Tomorrow afternoon will be our first session! I'm super excited to meet some new friends and see a few old ones. For our first class tomorrow, we will be learning and exploring finger knitting. Our class should go something like this:

I would like us all to introduce ourselves and become familiar with one another. We'll sit around the table and make friends with each other! I will also open up questions and answers of what fabric art means to each of us.

We will then discuss the art of knitting. I will show the class a few books and my own supplies that I have for knitting.

Specifically, we will discuss finger knitting and other techniques for the use of yarn to make future projects.

I have a demonstration on how to finger knit and we will spend the rest of class creating with yarn to our heart's content!

I'm so happy to be meeting everyone tomorrow!

Hello parents and students!

Tomorrow is our first GCK Sculpture class of the Winter Session and I'm so excited to begin sculpting with everyone! Sculpture begins at 3:00pm in the Multipurpose Room of the Atrium and will go until 3:45pm.

This sculpture class is all about exploring the world of art and letting creativity guide the artistic process! Sculpture is a very materials-based subject, and the best way to learn about a new material is to play with it! For every class, we will be introduced to a new type of material and through exploration and play, we will discovery how we can turn almost anything into art! This class is about the creative process and learning about how to develop creative solutions when using new materials.

Before we begin sculpting,
Let's get to know each other! We'll sit around a table and introduce ourselves, as well as talk about the things we like to make or what inspires us!
Afterward, we'll have a little discussion about what sculpture is and what we can use to create sculpture.

Tomorrow's material is Newspaper, and the project is Papier-mâché! Rather than using strips of paper and glue, the class will learn about transforming the material into pulp. Plup Papier-mâché is created when newspaper soaks in water over night and turns into mush! The water is drained and glue is added to the mixture. It's a lot like working with clay; it's a totally unique way to create art with paper!
Everyone will have the freedom to create whatever they'd like to; it's up to them to explore the material and figure out how they like to work with it best!
You can sculpt it like clay, mold it around different objects, draw in it, or invent a completely new way of using Papier-mâché!

I can't wait to create! Get ready for an exciting class everyone!

pre-Mom n' Me Movement 2/2

Hey dancing partners! Tomorrow at 10 am, we'll be meeting in the Atrium's Pool Room for 45 minutes of movement-driven fun. Our class will go something like this:

Shake Your Sillies Out: An invigorating, centering song and dance to get us moving and focused for class.

The Welcome Train: This game will start in a circle, with each of us introducing ourselves, then joining a snaking train around the room.

Circle Stretches: Some basic stretches, yoga-based, which we will repeat each week.

Jack and the Beanstalk: This game entails moms acting as beanstalks, while the kids play the part of Jack and then the Giant. We'll practice tip-toeing, climbing, and stomping movements.

With Your Partner: Sung to the tune of "Skip To My Lou", we will sing multiple verses that describe different movements for partners to mirror.

Freeze Dance: A fun release where everyone freestyles to a song, freezing in whatever position they take when the music stops.

Can't wait to get movin'!

Hi all you movers and shakers! To start things off on the right foot for Creative Movement tomorrow at 10 am, we'll be exploring what I like to call Storydancing. Here's what you can expect:

Introductions: In a circle, we'll take turns introducing ourselves and demonstrating a personal dance move to help us remember each other better.

The Story: We'll be reading Caps For Sale: A Tale of a Peddler, Some Monkeys, and Their Monkey Business all together. Then we'll discuss the different kinds of motion occurring in the story and the ways movements of the body can convey different messages.

Let's Get Movin': To test out our new ideas about movement, we'll put them in motion to songs of various tones and tempos.

Monkey See, Monkey Do: In this game, one person demonstrates a movement and everyone mimics what that person does. We'll take turns being the Monkey.

Greetings on this sunny Friday afternoon! Tomorrow morning marks the first day of GCK Winter classes and I, for one, am so excited. Theater starts at 9 am, where we will be doing a little Introducing, learning about both our classmates and some theater basics. The class will be structured something like this:

Introductions: In a circle, we'll take turns introducing ourselves and sharing some special piece of information to help us remember each other better.

Characters: We'll talk about our favorite characters (cartoons, animals, people) and spend some time imitating them - we'll be acting already!

Hand Expressions: With a couple of fun songs, we'll learn how our hands can be characters all on their own.

Made for the Stage: We'll introduce the stage, talk about how and why it is used, and everyone can practice clapping and bowing.

Let's Write a Play! Finally, we'll brainstorm some ideas for characters in a play that we will continue to develop week by week.

Classes must have five children enrolled to go forward.

Right now we only have two children enrolled.

This class is taught by Matt Whitehead. Matt also teaches classes at the University, he is an accomplished artist, and dad to a soon to be one year old. You can't find this level of instruction at this price anywhere else.

Why: Hey everyone! This is Heddy. I just read over the class descriptions for Creative Movement and it sounds awesome! Disco, African Dance, Holi Celebrations. Your child will dance around the world. What a great experience for any kid.
All the classes this session are going to be amazing....Sculpture, Painting, Theatre, Drawing, Movement, and Fabric Art. Really, this is an experience your child won't get anywhere else!

There is still plenty of space in class for more students.

Also, drop by for a free class anytime, just email and let us know ahead of time so we can have supplies ready for extra participants.
